“Concussion” presents an image of upper middle class lesbian life that feels casual and real. This one is a little sad, but its perspective is fascinating.

If you’ve been avoiding it because you see it as a standard Oscar-winning weepie, reconsider. Though the film is somber, it’s ending has such profound beauty and hope. It’s three stars (Alex Hibbert, Ashton Sanders, Trevante Rhodes) are equally talented at portraying a Southern Black gay man from childhood to adulthood. Veteran actors John Lithgow and Alfred Molina also deliver brilliantly nuanced performances in this tender love story about a long-standing, but only recently married, couple forced to live apart when they can no longer afford their New York apartment. There’s a lot of hype around Barry Jenkins’ sophomore feature, but it’s all warranted. The story of Any Day Now – a drag artist and his lawyer boyfriend battle for custody of a neighbour’s neglected Down Syndrome son in 1970s LA – sounds like pure Oscar bait.īut it’s to Alan Cumming and Garret Dillahunt’s credit that their subtle performances sidestep the showboating you might have expected, resulting in a heartfelt and affecting film that unfairly slipped below the radar on its 2012 release. The L in LGBT is fairly under-represented on Netflix, with this raunchy ‘90s rom-com from Kevin Smith the only film of any real note.Ĭhasing Amy’s politically incorrect humour won’t be for everyone, and its central boy-meets-girl who likes girls, girl then suddenly falls in love with boy plotline may also be troubling for some, but it’s an interesting and relatively early example of Hollywood exploring sexuality in a less black-and-white way. Get Real suffered in comparison to the excellent Beautiful Thing when it came to the ‘90s British coming-of-age/coming out drama.īut ignore the rather preachy ending and this sweet-natured tale still has plenty to offer, namely Charlotte Britain’s scene-stealing turn as Steven’s best-friend Linda and a portrayal of high school life which will be relatable to anyone who grew up as an outsider. Gijs Blom and Ko Zandvliet are thoroughly convincing as two athletics teammates who develop feelings for each other as they prepare for the relay championships, while the lush cinematography will soon have you booking a trip to the Dutch countryside. If Freier Fall has whetted your appetite for more foreign-language LGBT cinema, then you could do worse than check out this quietly restrained story of first love from the Netherlands. Sense 8’s Max Riemelt stars as a young police officer who embarks on an intense relationship with his conflicted married colleague in an intimate, authentic and beautifully-shot tale of star-crossed lovers. sees Michael J Willett’s closeted teen become the toast of his high school when after being accidentally outed, he has every popular girl vying to become his best friend.īrokeback Mountain sadly isn’t available on Netflix, but German drama Freier Fall is perhaps the next best thing. If you want to lighten the mood a little, then look no further than this fluffy and cartoonish comedy described as an LGBT take on Mean Girls. Using video diaries, interviews and home footage, this 2013 documentary deals with the picture perfect relationship between twentysomethings Thomas Lee Bridegroom and Shane Bitney Crone, and the aftermath of the former’s tragic death – ultimately making a hugely powerful argument for equal rights. Adapted from a YouTube short film, Bridegroom also deals with the same themes as the above, but is all the more heart-breaking for being a true story.
